Our Lord Jesus Christ is certainly a master teacher. He knows just how to create teachable moments in the lives of those with whom He interacts. In John 4, we catch a glimpse of our Saviour as He, wearied and thirsty from the journey towards Galilee, sits upon an ancient well and asks a Samaritan woman for a drink of water. In His own moment of thirst, He uses the concept of how water satisfies one’s physical thirst to communicate the two most important spiritual truths that one needs to know. First, there is a “water” that will immediately and eternally satisfy the thirst of one’s soul. Second, Jesus is the only source of that “water.” Jesus alone satisfies because it is He alone who offers salvation to the believing sinner. The account of the Samaritan woman is powerful. As we read the text we observe Christ reaching across the barriers of race, religion, lifestyle and gender as He offers this broken woman “water springing up into everlasting life.”

There are three kinds of spiritual thirst that man can experience. There is the thirst of the empty soul whereby the unsaved may be thirsting for something satisfying, not realizing that only Christ can quench the longing of his soul. This person may be indifferent and even ignorant of God, yet he is thirsty. We need to draw alongside this person, as Jesus did with the Samaritan woman, and point him to the water of life.

There is the thirst of the dry soul whereby a believer may be experiencing a season of spiritual dryness in his life. This dryness may be due to drinking to much from the polluted, stale cisterns of the world (Jeremiah 2:13) or from experiencing distressing times because of fatigue, stress or poor health. Sometimes a believer, because of troubling circumstances, can have difficulty sensing God’s nearness. We need to draw alongside this person, and reassure him of the life giving water that Christ offers. (Psalm 143:6-8)

There is also the thirst of the satisfied soul whereby one has tasted the goodness of the Lord and craves more of it. God has not designed him so that one experience with Christ satiates all future desire. In fact, it’s just the opposite. God has placed His Holy Spirit within this believer, as a spring of living water (John 7:37-39). A spring satisfies thirst – not by removing the need he has for water, but by being there to give him water whenever he gets thirsty, again and again.

The late A.W. Tozer once penned these helpful words: “O God, I have tasted thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need for further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, I want thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made thirsty still.”

Child Evangelism Fellowship will hold CYIA Training on NBBI campus from Sunday, July 1 to Friday, July 6, 2012.

For the past nine years I have had the blessing of working with Child Evangelism Fellowship in Northern Maine. God has given us a tremendous responsibility to reach the lost and it is our passion in CEF to reach children with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Each year hundreds of boys and girls are presented with the message of salvation through various CEF sponsored ministries.

As a child, I was exposed to many CEF ministries. As I reached my teen and young adult years, I had the privilege to serve in various ministries such as Awana, Word of Life Clubs and others. One thing that I found invaluable was the training that I had received during my early teen years. For two summers, I attended a training camp called “Christian Youth In Action.” I was challenged to have a heart for the lost, to develop my relationship with the Lord, and to have confidence when sharing my faith.

One of our greatest goals is not only to share the gospel, but to equip others with the training and tools to do the same. Christ Himself said that He came for the lost and the need is as great today as it was then. CEF of Canada and CEF of Maine have partnered to bring Christian Youth In Action training to New Brunswick. NBBI has graciously agreed to host the CYIA training on their campus. CYIA is an intense training program that provides youth with the How-to’s of giving a clear and thorough presentation of the gospel while also providing opportunities to gain hands on experience.

The program is designed for ages 15 and up and will be held from Sunday, July 1 to Friday, July 6, 2012. If you would like to know more about CYIA or request brochures and applications, feel free to contact Alex Bourgoin at: (207) 425-2471, (207) 227-5411 or visit our link at: http://cefofmaine.org.

The two words “nothing undone” from Joshua 11:15 probably best describe the life and ministry of Joshua, the man God chose to lead His people into the promised land. These words are described in Joshua 11:15 and 23. That is, God accomplished through Joshua all that He originally intended and declared to do through Moses. In Exodus 33, God told Moses that He would drive out all the Canaanites, but not through Moses or with the then present generation. Joshua would be the one God would use to fulfil His Word and His will. Joshua 11:23 is an amazing testimony to God’s faithfulness. “So Joshua took the whole land…and the land rested from war.”

The question for us to ask is, “What was Joshua’s success secret?” Joshua stated before all Israel, “…as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

1. Joshua had a strong personal commitment. He boldly declared, “…as for me….” A leader people will follow must be willing to state and prove his personal determination and dedication to the task to which God has called him, and then set the example and follow through to the end.

2. Joshua determined that his family would also follow God. The words “my house” indicates that he felt responsible for his family and that, by God’s grace, they would serve God as well.

3. Joshua knew the true meaning of “serve”. He had served Moses well as spy and second in command and now he served God with the full weight of all the responsibility of the nation on his shoulders.

The testimony of God at the end of Joshua’s life is found in Joshua 24:31. “And Israel served God all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders that overlived (outlived) Joshua….” What a fitting epitaph for a servant of God who left “nothing undone!”

How would you like hundreds of teens to converge upon your home, scream all weekend, stay up half the night, and then leave exhausted when it’s all over. Well that is what happened at NBBI. Our students opened up their home (the dorms) and welcome hundreds of teens for two action packed exciting weekends. This year’s “Encounter 2012” was one of our best yet. Our two speakers Mr. Jon Ward and Pastor Trent Boyd powerfully presented God’s Word and the response was incredible. Over 15 teenagers put their faith in Christ and dozens more rededicated their lives to the Lord. That is why our students tirelessly work to put these weekends together, that is why faithful youth leaders bring their teenagers to us, and that is what the ministry of NBBI is all about. The games were amazing as usual, the food was great, the music was awesome, but the fact that several entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ makes it all worthwhile.

Here’s what others were saying about “Encounter 2012”:

“I would attend another retreat in a heartbeat! It was amazing!”

“I loved the sessions (Bible). They taught me a lot about God, and things that I need to know about being a Christian that I never knew.”

“It was absolutely amazing, and made a huge change and impact on my life!…the best weekend of my life.”

“The games and activities were awesome.”

“The students (NBBI students) are fantastic. Please let them know that they are so instrumental to making a positive impact on teens.”

But do not take their word for it, mark February 2013 on your calendar and plan on joining us. A big thank you for the tremendous work of our students and to all the youth leaders who brought their young people to our campus.

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded the discipline of psychoanalysis. His many other Freudian theories have garnished much attention and spurred on much debate. His insights have been scrutinized, analyzed and often times rejected. What about the man? Freud died at the age of eighty-three a lonely, bitter, disillusioned soul. He wrote in 1918, “I have found little that is good about human beings on the whole. In my experience most of them are trash…” The thoughts that Freud put to pen have been unfortunately tucked away and harboured by many.

Hebrews 12:15 says, “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”

Bitterness is like the weed that, when tending the garden, won’t be uprooted without a fight. Often offenders have no idea the deep hurt they have caused and so wounded believers suffer the pain of the hurt alone. Over time, they rehearse the trauma like a movie playing again and again in their minds and soon the bitter spirit that has been building is becoming much easier to justify. We become comfortable with our hurt and numb to its devastating affects.

If we allow “bitterness” to spring up in our lives then we are looking for “trouble”. It will spell trouble for us and trouble for others; it will trouble our families, it will trouble our marriages, it will trouble our churches, it will trouble our health, it will trouble our joy, it will trouble our friendships, it will trouble our ministries, and it will trouble our relationships with Jesus Christ. The devastating reaches of a bitter heart are often grossly underestimated. One angry saint that is harbouring the pain and anger of unresolved problems can do more damage to himself and others then he will ever really know. What did the apostle Paul do when the opportunity to harbour bitterness presented itself? He said, “Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works… At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge”, II Timothy 4:14,16. There is no hurt so deep in your life right now nor pain that you feel that is so great that God’s grace cannot reach down and bring healing and cause you to reach out and extend forgiveness.

In his 1998 book, “The New Tolerance,” Josh McDowell gives the definitions of “traditional tolerance” and “the new tolerance.” He defines the new tolerance by quoting Fernando Savater who wrote, “Tolerance… is that all opinions are equal… and all should be respected or praised.” I agree that this cancer of unbelief was permeating society and is even more so now, fourteen years later.

But what is real tolerance and biblical tolerance, and how does it fit Christianity today. Is there room for it in our doctrinal and practical standards? The Oxford Dictionary defines tolerance as “the ability to accept things one dislikes or disagrees with.”

The Christian tolerance that I think needs re-defining is the tolerance needed between brothers and sisters in Christ that allows us to disagree on matters that are not critical to our faith without dividing us in regard to fellowship. For example, if I think the new vinyl siding on the parsonage should be white and another thinks it should be gray – does it matter? Should I be disgruntled or upset? Never! Yet, sometimes we let insignificant things divide us. Paul says in I Corinthians 13:5-7, “Charity… seeketh not her own,… beareth all things,… endureth all things.” This simply means that true godly love toward others is not selfish, always finds a way to forgive, and is strong and durable.

Paul strengthens his proposition about how we are to get along in our relationships in Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Very likely, if this command was practiced, our tolerance for each other as Christians, in Christian matters, would be high. Of course, Paul goes on to show us the perfect example of humility and grace – Christ Jesus. The Creator of the universe took on Himself the form of a servant and then gave His life and shed His blood because He loved us so much. How can we do any less than love one another and exhibit biblical tolerance, “real tolerance.”

Leanne (Baker ’83) Carter recently sent this letter from Austria. I thought our readers might enjoy it. Please continue to pray for Leanne and her sons, David and Jonathan.

“Thank you for your many prayers for us. We are blessed by them. It was good for us to ski together on the anniversary of Warren’s accident, to celebrate his life. The ‘mountain’ took excellent care of us. We were given lift tickets and lunch on the mountain by the company that runs the lifts. The fine people at our ski school, that the boys attended for the last 6 years, welcomed us with open arms. Their chins almost hit the floor when we walked through the door to rent skis (which they wouldn’t let us pay for). Last year, when I said good bye, I told them we would not be coming back. Hmmm, I am glad God changed my mind. At lunch, David’s ski teacher from last year spotted us and was very pleased to see us and find out how we were doing. We skied to the site of Warren’s accident and I was yet again amazed at how flat the slope was where the accident occurred. It was a very emotional moment for me.

Thank you to those who sent notes to share with my boys on the anniversary of Warren’s death, Feb. 14th. This was a very important day for me as a mother. I wanted my boys to receive their father’s teaching and catch a glimpse of heaven.

In December, I had to write a report on my plans and goals for the next two years (special thanks to my editor, Nikki, who helped me turn my diagrams, pictures, schedule and ideas into a concise report). One point that was very clear for me is that discipleship and mentoring (I like to call it ‘Adventuring’) of women in leadership and women who are wives of leaders should be a main focus. Just two weeks ago a new Bible study group of young women started meeting in my home. Three of them I have known since they were children, and now they are married and have children of their own! Yes, I have been around awhile. It is a privilege to have this precious time with them.

We are blessed to have you in our lives!

Love,

Leanne, Jonathan and David.”

June 17-22
June 24-29 (Camp NBBI will run this second week.)

This is a family-friendly event so bring along the whole clan. NBBI provides housing, meals and supplies at no cost to our volunteers. We do ask you to bring your own bedding and toiletry items if you are staying on campus.

Camp NBBI will be held this year during our second week (June 24 – 29). This is a day camp (hosted right on our campus) for children ages 5-12. There will be games, sports and craft activities along with singing and Bible lessons.

Our 2012 goal for Vacation with a Vision is to raise $25,000. There are some renovations to a building which need to be done and a couple of roofing projects. Campus beautification, painting, grounds upkeep and maintenance of our property will also be on the agenda.

You can register for this event by filling out the online form below. Please provide a separate entry for each participant.

The Open Bible Bulletin has a new updated look!

Thank you for your patience over the last couple of months. We have been working toward a full-colour bulletin and it has taken longer to get things set up than we anticipated. We trust that those who were having difficulty reading the small print on grey background will be able to see the new, larger print better, especially since it is not black on grey. With this new, full-colour bulletin, we hope to attract more attention so a larger number of our readers will feel like picking up a copy and reading the excellent articles inside.

We will continue to keep you up-to-date on what is happening on our campus, and in the lives of our students and staff. Good, Bible-related articles will be included each month. And, with the help of our alumni, we hope to include more news and updates from our past graduates. If you are an alumnus and would like to send us an update on what you are doing or share an exciting event that has taken place in your ministry, drop us a line. You can contact us by email or by post by mailing information to:

Open Bible Bulletin
2335 Route 103
Victoria Corner NB E7P 1C7
Canada

Send photos of you and your ministry as well! Our space is limited so be brief. Don’t worry too much about grammar and sentence structure. We will edit it for you. Also, keep in mind, we do work a couple of months ahead of time.

Looking back over the years, I could say that I had the classic “Christian testimony.” I was born into a Christian home, saved when I was young, dedicated my life to God when I was 12, baptised the same year, and I am now at NBBI.

God has especially used NBBI to bring major changes in my life. When I came here as a freshman almost three years ago, I thought that I was coming for an education in Scripture, not practical life lessons. Looking back, I would have to say that, although classes have been amazing and I have learned a lot from them, the most valuable lessons have come through the practical application of Scripture in my life.

One of the main lessons that I have learned is that I cannot do it in my own strength. Although it sometimes seems like I cannot go on, God has always been there to support and encourage me. Through Scripture, classes, friends, prayer and many other ways, God has always shown Himself faithful. Through my years at NBBI I have learned that God’s strength is sufficient for me and when I am weak, He is strong.

“We rejoice in what the Lord has done in the past few months here. The signing for the church property will be this Friday (October 18).

On Sunday, October 9th, we celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the church. It was great to remember how God has blessed us. It has not been easy and many times it has been a great struggle to get this church started. From the start we have felt opposition to this church plant, but we see and know that God is building His church here. One family is missing from the picture, they were not able to attend that day because of a car accident.

Last week we had the privilege of meeting Erica and Roberto who live on the same block as the church. During our visit, Roberto accepted the Lord as his Saviour. Erica is a Christian. Pray that the Lord will bless this young couple and that they will start coming to our church meetings.”

Whenever we think of obedience and disobedience we automatically think of the nation of Israel and their vacillating relationship to God. I have been reading Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy this month and noted three basic observations about Israel and our God – the disobedience of Israel, the consequences of disobedience and the continued faithfulness of God despite disobedience.

The disobedience of Israel is easy to document, from the murmuring about food and water to the molding of a golden calf idol and much more. It is not my intention to enumerate all of our sins, or theirs, but we need to realize the seriousness of the sin of disobedience. If the God of the universe commands or expects something of me then I need to respond and do it. I think the key to God’s thinking on obedience is found in 1 Samuel 15:22 where King Saul did not fully obey God in destroying the Amalekites. Samuel confronted Saul and made this statement, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” Saul’s excuse for disobedience becomes a lesson for us.

The consequences of disobedience are obvious in the Old Testament as well. For instance, none of the original first generation of Israelites who left Egypt were allowed to enter the promised land except Caleb and Joshua. Even Moses was prohibited from entering because he hit the rock twice instead of simply speaking to it to give his people water, as God had instructed. What a sad moment personally for Moses when God brought him to Mount Pisgah and allowed him to see the new land, understanding that he would never enter it. Solomon put it well in Proverbs 9:10 when he said, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” We must have reverence for our God whereby we understand the consequences of disobedience.

There are a number of instances where God proves His faithfulness to Israel. In Deuteronomy 3, the Lord reminds them that He is on their side and He will fight for them. In chapter 2, He recounts the victories and the boundaries of Israel. In chapter 7, they are reminded of His love and blessing.

Obedience to our Lord, through His Word, is the key to living this life with His blessing and in the victory He desires and provides for His children.
