The little reminder sign over the incubator in the newborn nursery simply said “FTT.” A medical acronym for “failure to thrive.” Failure to thrive is a fairly common medical condition of varying causes and has been associated with adverse effects on later growth and cognitive development. Simply put, often when a newborn is experiencing stress they will sometimes develop feeding issues, and therefore have a lower caloric intake, which in turn can lead to growth and development problems. Babies need to sense peace and security if they are to have an appetite for their mother’s milk or they risk developing feeding and growth problems.

It’s been many years since I’ve worked with newborn babies as a Respiratory Therapist, but I’ve not forgotten the importance of the need for handling these precious little ones extra gently, minimizing their stress so that their nutritional health could be optimized.

In much the same way, God has told us that we must first lay aside the kind of stress-inducing attitudes that will keep us from being at peace with those around us so that in turn we will desire to take in the “sincere milk of the Word”, in order that we might grow.
“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” 1 Peter 2:1-3.

In this passage Peter dealt with the very things that will surely cause us to lose our appetite for the sincere milk of the Word. In effect, the very things that would cause “FTT” in God’s people, hinder our spiritual growth and development. Notice what we are to lay aside:

1. Malice – wicked ill will towards others.
2. Guile – all forms of dishonesty.
3. Hypocrisy – pretending to be what one is not.
4. Envy – jealousy based on discontentment.
5. Evil Speakings – gossip and insulting slander.

When these terrible attitudes are present in our lives, they not only cause us to lack peace and experience stress, they greatly diminish our appetite for God’s truth. Along with that, these attitudes represent spite for those in our lives who perhaps desperately need to see the reality of God’s Word at work in us. The bottom line is simply this. If these attitudes are present, we’re really not going to be thirsty for the sincere milk of the Word and we’re not going to be growing. Our immediate spiritual health is affected and our long-term growth and development is jeopardized.

We grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18) as we take in the sincere milk of the Word, having tasted that the Lord is gracious. (1 Peter 2:1-3)

May God bless you with much grace and rich growth this summer!

Last summer, I was presented with an opportunity to go on a mission trip to Uganda, Africa. The Lord was gracious and supplied all that was necessary to go. March break came around and I began my journey to another continent. Four planes, 38 hours and a few airline meals later, I landed in Entebbe National Airport in Kimpala, Uganda which has a population of 18 million. There I spent the next 8 days ministering in different ways. I worked alongside Gil and Amanda Nkemwesiga, who are both full-time Word of Life missionaries in Uganda.

Having been previously involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship, I brought along some of the teaching material that I was familiar with. Word of Life, Uganda gave me ample opportunity to work and serve. I was able to conduct a Good News Club in a local elementary school. We had a regular attendance of about 50 kids. The faculty at the school could not have been more welcoming, giving us all the time we needed to conduct any sort of program we wanted. How great it was to be able to be so open with the Gospel! A high school in Kimpala invited me to speak at their assembly. Many students there responded to the Gospel and you could clearly see the Lord working in them. I also had an opportunity to teach a Bible Study for university-aged young people. It was very nice to be able to speak with people my age, who live in an entirely different culture, but are excited about the same Lord. Amongst the heat and foreign food, which was a bit different from a county-grown baked potato, I was able to build friendships with people there. They want someone to talk to so badly, and it was sad to see how much they wanted me to stay with them and just talk.

Overall, the experience was amazing. God worked in my life, and He worked in many lives there. I was able to use what I have been learning at NBBI and apply it to this trip. My thanks goes out to those involved in sending me, and I praise God for the work He did, and give Him all the Glory.

As human beings we can prove to be incredibly impatient. If we are forced to endure a lineup at a drive through for any more than a few minutes we are often ready to blow a gasket. Our world has been built for speed and the poor soul who is taking life in stride and plodding away better move over or get run over. As Christians that bear the mark of our Creator, this attitude makes us so much unlike God.

This reminds me of the student sitting in a Bible college chapel who, after looking at the order of service, groaned out loud. The middle-aged lady next to him asked what was the matter and the student replied, “It’s the preacher, he is one of my teachers. He is boring and dull. His classes seem to go on forever.” “Oh,” said the woman. “Do you know who I am?” The student looked at her and said that he didn’t. “Well,” said the woman, “I’m the preacher’s wife!” The student then said faintly, “And do you know who I am?” “No,” said the professor’s wife. “Hallelujah,” said the student.

What is patience? One meaning is “the capacity for calm, self-possessed waiting.” The patience of God is clearly on display in Genesis 5 in the most powerful way. Verse 21 tells us that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, begat Methuselah. This fact hardly seems life-altering but Enoch named his son Methuselah meaning “when he dies, it shall come.” What would come? The flood. You see Methuselah became the symbol of God’s patience. The second Methuselah was born, a countdown began to judgement. Every day of Methuselah’s life was an extension of God’s mercy and patience. His birth marked the promise of doom, yet he lived to be the oldest man who ever walked the planet (969 years). Every beat of Methuselah’s heart reminded man that God is “…longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

The one man in history that God chose to symbolize His impending judgement lived longer than any other human.

“And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgement: blessed are all they that wait for him.” (Isaiah 30:18)

One of the most remarkable stories in all of the Bible is the story of Samson. He was the strong man; judge of Israel and arch nemesis of the Philistines. His birth was miraculous and his rise to fame was nothing short of legendary.

Samson’s commitment to God, through his Nazarite vow, was the key to his strength (Judges 16:17). The enemy constantly sought an opportunity to find out what would make Samson weak, but they failed to realize that Samson would become weak long before the locks of his hair were cut off. Samson’s undoing would prove to come through the portal of his eyes. In Judges 14:1-3; 16:1, we find the following statements, “saw a woman”, “I have seen a woman”, “for she pleaseth me well” (literally, is right in my eyes), “saw there an harlot”. The man who was renowned for his strength would be brought to his knees because he couldn’t harness his own fleshly desires.
When the enemy finally subdued him, after cutting his hair (Judges 16:9), the first thing they did was put out his eyes (Judges 16:21). Little did they know that they had done Samson a favour. By taking out his eyes, they eliminated the lifelong hindrance that Samson had. Now, in his blindness, he was able to see God like never before. His sight had proven to be his downfall and now his blindness would lead to his greatest moment of victory.

As Samson’s hair began to grow back, this blind man was brought into the house of the Philistines and placed between two pillars. As the crowd no doubt taunted him, he was able to push down the pillars of that house so that “the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.” (Judges 16:30)

When Samson’s eyes were removed, he did more in his blindness than he ever did with his sight and, may I add, he saw more of God in his blindness then he ever did with his sight.

The prayer of every believer aught to be, “Lord, remove from me that which hinders my view of You, and that which keeps me from accomplishing all that You desire me to do.”

Land mines are one of the most dangerous weapons in the world. Long after military conflicts end, these devastating devices lurk beneath the surface ready to wreak havoc on unsuspecting victims. Land mines are currently scattered across 78 countries and have killed or maimed over one million people. Approximately 26,000 people a year, 70 people a day or 1 person every fifteen minutes step on a land mine. It is estimated that there are 110 million active land mines worldwide. Due to World War II and the Egypt-Israel wars of 1956, 1967 and 1973, Egypt has the most land mines of any country in the world with an estimated 23 million. The nomadic people in Egypt refer to the mine field deserts as “The Devil’s Garden.”

We might rightly say that the world is “The Devil’s Garden” for he is its prince (John 12:31). The believer can hardly take a step in this world without encountering a spiritual land mine that is hidden beneath the surface but God has a solution.

Proverbs 2:21,23 says, “…keep sound wisdom and discretion…Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.” Proverbs reminds us that by wisdom God created the world (3:19) and by wisdom we must live in it (3:21). If our minds are focused on God’s Word and our lives are led by the Holy Spirit, “Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.”

Matthew Henry made this keen observation, “Wisdom will direct us into, and keep us in, the safe way, as far as may be, from temptation, and will enable us to walk in it with holy security.”

Satan has land mines that he would like us to step on but Psalm 119:98 says, “Thou through thy commandments has made me wiser than mine enemies.” The explosive land mines of sin can be avoided by the careful leading of God.

Jared Grover graduated from NBBI in 2000 from the Diploma of Biblical and Theological Studies program. He and his wife, Sarah, live in Kanata, Ontario.

Jared writes, “There are no words to describe the blessings that God has poured out in our lives. Since graduating NBBI, I have met and married my beautiful wife, Sarah, who continually seeks to encourage me and serve God with all that she has. This past July 10th our first child, Grace Sophia, was born and she continues to bring us more joy than we had ever imagined. To top it all off, God is allowing us to be very actively involved in our home church through kids ministries, music and worship ministries, youth ministries, and men’s ministries. Needless to say, we have so much to be thankful for.

My love and prayers are continually with all of my wonderful friends and Christian family that have had a part in my life and in the lives of so many through the ministry of New Brunswick Bible Institute. Special thanks to Mr. Hoag for recently taking the time to make some friends from our church feel so welcome to Victoria Corner. These friends randomly found NBBI on their way down the road to Woodstock from Hartland. Who does that? No one just randomly comes across NBBI. I guess they must have been God led.”

Join us… June 23-28 & June 30-July 5, 2013

Dr. Howard Hendricks once said, “God is not looking for more stars; He is looking for more servants.” That statement is very true and summarizes what we are looking for in our Vacation with a Vision ministry. Every summer we have an endless amount of projects that need to be accomplished; everything from construction to general maintenance, landscaping to cleaning, and in between. We are not looking for professionals, we are looking for servants. Whatever your skill set might be, if you are interested in this ministry and would like to help us maintain it, we can use you. Come by yourself; come with a family; or bring a group from your church. We will feed you, house you, provide great opportunities for fellowship and put you to work helping us maintain our campus and build this ministry. Prayerfully consider coming during one of the weeks provided.

Solomon, in Ecclesiastes, contrasts two attitudes that can prevail in one’s journey in life and concludes, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

God’s sovereign purposes can be missed when we become proud in spirit and substitute ourselves for God and our ideas for God’s Word. “For in a multitude of dreams and many words, there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.” The word “vanity” comes from a Hebrew word that means “empty and transitory.” The patient in spirit follow God’s inspired, eternal Word which produces faith in the serious student, leading to a life of godliness. They understand that this is a lifelong journey with God. Jim Elliot once wrote, “One does not surrender his life in an instant. That which is lifelong can only be surrendered in a lifetime.” God’s truth is eternal and whatsoever God does it is forever. We are justified the moment we believe in Christ but Christlike surrender is the business of a lifetime. So, as believers, whether we look in the mirror at ourselves or across the room at someone else, it behooves us to be patient in spirit for God is not finished with us yet. May we run the marathon race of life with patient attendance to God’s Word, prayer, witnessing and serving our fellow man according to the gifts and calling of God.

God’s sovereign purposes can be missed by us when we invest in the wrong things “There is a sore evil that I have seen under the sun, riches kept by the owners thereof to their hurt…As he came forth out of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came and shall take nothing of his labour which he may carry away in his hand.” Dear believer, treasures stored in heaven cannot be lost; treasures stored in heaven have no cares attached to them; treasures stored in heaven offer joy, peace, comfort and no earthly investment can do that. Christians need to heed Solomon’s words and not “store up treasures on earth” to be lost at death but, rather “lay up treasures in Heaven where moth and rust does not corrupt” and “thieves do not break through and steal.”

Make an investment of your time today in somebody who needs you and an investment of your treasure in someone or something that will bring eternal dividends.

How does your righteousness compare with that of those around you? If you attempted to answer this question then you have joined in a dangerous game that will have no victors. Anytime we compare ourselves by ourselves, we will always come out smelling like a rose. In fact, if the standard for righteousness was how we measured up against others then we might rightly say that the “righteous standard” is always open to change. Paul said to the Corinthian believers, “For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.” 2 Corinthians 10:18.

Unfortunately for many in Christendom, the name of the game is to just stay a few steps behind the world. That way when their lives are placed under the microscope of scrutiny they can say, “But at least we are more righteous than they.” Habakkuk tried to pull this off when he found out that God was going to use the Chaldeans to judge His own people. He asked how God could hold His tongue, “…when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?” Habakkuk 1:13b

Many believers fail to recognize that God is the standard for righteousness and since Malachi 3:6 says that God does not change that means the standard for righteousness is unmoveable. As the world moves further away from God and we are content to simply remain a few steps behind them then we must conclude that we too are moving away from God.

Genesis 7:1 is a very powerful verse that speaks to this problem. It says, “And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.” The standard of righteousness has always been God and never how we stand up against others. The world will try to convince you to live your life constantly measuring yourself by others. Instead, your life ought to mirror the righteous standard of God. This means that the world should be moving away from you and, as you cling to God’s righteous standard, the longer you live the further apart you should become.

Post by John Hoag

Dr. Robert Booker has officially retired from NBBI. He will continue to live on our campus and do limited travel and ministry on behalf of the school. In his own words, Bob has chosen to describe his retirement as a “slight change in direction.”

Bob, as he is affectionately known by his friends, was the president of the freshman class at NBBI in 1965. We were classmates that year and our class verse was, “But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.“ Acts 6:4. When I think of this verse, I know that Bob Booker has lived out the truth of giving himself to prayer. The literally thousands of miles we travelled together always began with prayer, multitudes of decisions he had to make were bathed in prayer, and when he was asked to be interim President, he made “prayer” the emphasis of our school year.

In 1982 he joined the New Brunswick Bible Institute staff. His life has been given to teaching the Word of God. In teaching Bible, Missions, Public Speaking and personally communicating with many students in his office as their friend, Bob Booker influenced many young people to take the Word to the world.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord, ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24. Bob Booker also loves the outdoors. This perhaps reflects his being brought up in Maine, where they describe their lifestyle as “the way life should be.” Bob has enjoyed good Christian fellowship with many friends in God’s creation by canoeing, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and swapping stories round a campfire or in a cabin by the lake. Whatever Bob does it can be described as being done “heartily.”

As his fellow workers we would agree that his service exemplifies a life-long diligence to duty. He has been an important member of the leadership team at NBBI serving as a Board Member, Dean of Men, Dean of the school, Vice-President and interim President over his years of service. His construction skills have played an important part in the campus expansion projects. In his teaching ministry on campus and his work as a faithful member of his local church, Bob Booker is a man who can be counted upon to faithfully, promptly and heartily fulfil his commitments.

Bob Booker is first my loyal friend and my beloved brother in Christ. We, the Staff and Board, know that he carries his share of the load with integrity, dexterity, loyalty and humility. We also know that, “in word and deed”, he has desired to honour the name of Jesus Christ. We, as fellow team members, thank God for Bob and Avis and will continue to value their fellowship in another stage of their service for Christ. “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus , giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:17.

Austin (’56) and Wilma Calder wish to send their greetings to our NBBI family.

Austin Calder graduated from New Brunswick Bible Institute in 1956. Since then, with support from his wife, Wilma, he has been serving the Lord in the pastorate and as a travelling evangelist. Austin pastored the Allagash Baptist Church in Allagash, ME, the Calvary Baptist Church in Moncton, NB and the People’s Church in Truro, NS. After leaving the pastorate, Austin did evangelism for 15 years with New Life Ministries.

Following his retirement, Austin and Wilma moved back to his summer home on Campobello Island. While there he assisted the North Road Baptist Church by filling in as their Pastor for a few years and then Wilson’s Beach Baptist Church. When he finished at Wilson’s Beach, Pastor Calder was 84 years old. He turned 92 on February 5, 2013.

Currently, Austin and Wilma live with their daughter, Grace, in Halifax, NS. Austin is still an avid reader, averaging two books per month and just finished reading through the Bible for the 58th time. He routinely speaks of his past ministries with great enthusiasm and love for his former congregants and friends. He often prays for those of whom he thinks.

The Calders’ eldest daughter, Grace works as a real-estate agent in Halifax, and is also a private Christian Counsellor. She has just finished writing her first book entitled “A Heart of Flesh”, which is available on-line through Amazon. Their middle daughter Lorraine is living in Tennessee with her husband, Ken, and working as missionaries with Above and Beyond, an organization they built. His son Austin Jr. (Gerald) works as Senior pastor in Florida at South Palm Beach Community Church, and is married with four children. If you would like to send the Calders a note their address is:

“And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.” Matthew 17:8.

It was a particular busy time in the life of Peter, James and John. In the previous weeks, they had travelled many dangerous miles, witnessed more than a few miraculous events, ministered to crowds of thousands and had learned some very hard lessons. Now as they trudged up yet another high mountain in this harsh wilderness, I wonder what thoughts might have consumed their attention…

Where is the Master taking us today? Why didn’t the other disciples come with us? Is this what Jesus meant when He said, “Follow Me”? I didn’t sign up for this! Did anyone pack a lunch? How much further before we reach the top? Hey, is there somewhere to get a drink because I’m getting a bit thirsty? What did Jesus mean the other day when He said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” I wonder if we will get back before dark? Watch out! Don’t step in that! How am I going to pay for a new pair of sandals now that these are just about worn out? I hope the view from the top is worth it!

Although the Bible remains mostly silent on what these disciples might have been thinking, with a bit of “sanctified imagination” you can easily envision it. They probably had the same cares and considerations that any of us would have had. One thing is clear; when this group reached the summit, a glorious change took place.

In an instant, every worry, worldly concern and idle notion fled as the Man who had led them up the mountain revealed His eternal majesty to them. The Bible tells us, “His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light.” Matthew 17:2. This same Jesus who had climbed the alpine trail earlier that day, and who had probably stopped a few times along the way to catch His breath, suddenly revealed His unveiled deity to them.

One can only imagine what it might have been like when these three looked on and saw Moses (Representing the Law) and Elijah (Representing the Prophets) communing with the transfigured Christ. Later, John would likely reference this when he wrote in his gospel account, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:14. Oh, the overwhelming fear that must have gripped their hearts when the heavenly cloud enveloped them and the voice of God the Father spoke, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.” Matthew 17:5. These awestruck disciples fell on their faces and would have remained there had it not been that, “Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.” Matthew 17:8.

Even though I was brought up in a Christian home and came from a faithful church in Quebec, I had never surrendered my life to the Lord. During the summer 2009, I attended the Christian summer camp, Camp Brochet, in Chicoutimi and I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour on my 16th birthday. That was a day I will never forget!

Before that day, I thought that Bible school was an option only for those who had nothing better to do. After becoming a child of God, I decided to dedicate my life to the service of the Lord and I knew that the first step was to study His Word deeply and diligently. My church presented NBBI to me as being a very good school to learn God’s Word. My plan was to come here for one year to gain a solid foundation in God’s Word, but this plan has given me a burden to serve the Lord and become a minister in Quebec. That one year has turned into three and I am now planning to do my fourth year in my home church.

The Lord has taught me great things, such as the importance of discipleship and the importance of letting His Word work in my life and in the lives of others. He has helped me through many struggles for which I’m thankful because they have shown me that I cannot solve things by myself. The Lord expects me to turn to Him and to bow at His feet in every situation. I have also met wonderful people here and I have been able to really master my English as a second language. I only have great things to say about my experience here at NBBI. I am not entirely sure what the Lord has for me in the future, but one thing is sure: I will keep studying His Word as long as He allows me to and I will go wherever He wants me to and do whatever He expects of me. There is nothing greater than serving Him.

One thing I am sure of is that I can always come to the Lord in prayer and He will listen. Two verses that have been an incredible blessing to me are: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7). I am just very excited to see what the Lord has for me.
